Last year alone, an estimated 5 million people acquired HIV – adding to the 40 million women, men and children estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS world-wide. At the end of 2003, 12 million children living in Sub-Saharan Africa were orphaned by AIDS. An estimated 385,000 people are living with AIDS. It is estimated that world-wide 5 people die of AIDS every minute.

Started in 1988, World AIDS Day is designed to focus global attention on the HIV/AIDS epidemic and is commemorated around the world on December 1 by highlighting progress made in the battle against the epidemic and reminding people the AIDS crisis is not over and how much still needs to be done. World AIDS Day is a worldwide, annual observance to raise public awareness and educate people about HIV and AIDS. One day a year, we are not separated by agencies, politics, governments or geography. We are together. World AIDS Day is a chance to strengthen our commitment and to remember the estimated 30 million lives lost to this devastating global epidemic.

World AIDS Day is about raising awareness, education and fighting prejudice. World AIDS Day is also important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done.  This day we honor those living with HIV/AIDS as well as those who have died from the disease.

“Out of Sight, Out of Mind”  The Red Ribbon is the international symbol of AIDS awareness. This year we challenge you to wear a red ribbon on December 1st and help make those around you aware that the AIDS crisis is not over.

In recognition of World AIDS Day there are several events in Louisville including but not limited to those below.  If you organization is hosting an event to commemorate World AIDS Day and you would like us to include the event on our website, please email: wad@asccinc.org
